The phrase, Just show up has been following me around for a few weeks now, along with the constant reminder to myself to take small and consistent steps daily when i’m working on projects, so I thought I’d write a blog post on it.
The takeaway? If you’re someone who gets really excited by lots of different projects and ideas and you just never feel like you have time for everything, pick one of these things to focus on and just show up consistently to work on it. Take small steps daily. Even if you’re not sure how to do everything, there’s always at least one small thing you can do right now to move you forwards, even if in the grand scheme of things it seems insignificant.
I’ve been writing fewer blog posts recently, because most of my work energy when my baby’s sleeping, has been going into creating my own online course. I don’t have long each day to work on it, but I’ve been showing up to do at least an hour of consistent work each day.
I have this quite perfectionist idea of how I want my course to look in the end and in my head, I genuinely think I have a good idea that will really help and provide a lot of value for people. However, sometimes, when I sit down to work, I’m way too bigger picture orientated. Does anyone else find this?
I sit down and my task might be to simply write the draft for one small part of a module and do it as best as I can, but sometimes I can’t stop thinking about the course as a whole and how much work there is to do on it, such as making the videos as good as they can be, finding affiliates to help get the message out, making sure I’ve included everything…
When you get excited quite often and you enjoy daydreaming, and thinking up new plans and ideas, it can require a lot of willpower to stay on track, and not get excited by the next new thing until you’ve followed through with your original idea.
Sometimes everything can seem overwhelming, and you might have no idea what step 10 or 11 is when you’re only on step two, but as long as you know where you want to head, I genuinely believe all the steps will be revealed, you just have to get started, show up, and try not to be too overly perfectionist about things.
I think when being super organised doesn’t come naturally, just showing up daily to do something is really good advice — at least I think it’s working for me, because even if I only write a few paragraphs one day or have 10 minutes to put into my course, I feel productive and it all (hopefully) adds up.
