I am an affiliate for Be a Modern Master and highly recommend the course, especially if you want to go deeper into a deep level of meditation and reach a higher level of spiritual awareness.
Deborah King’s Be a Modern Master course has to be one of the deepest meditations I’ve ever practised, and although the course is six weeks long, one year on, I’m still practising the techniques outlined in this course almost daily.
Over the last decade I’ve spent a long time trying out so many different meditation and yoga practices — immersing myself in sensory deprivation floatation tanks, going on a 10 day silent vipassana meditation retreat, travelling to India on three separate occasions to practice yoga and meditation, participating in shamanic tea ceremonies…the list continues. Five years ago I even took a year long course in London to train to teach meditation, and teaching yoga is now what I do for a living.
Why am I mentioning all of this? Despite trying all of these practices which were all incredible experiences in their own right, I never managed to find a daily meditation practice I could stick to for a prolonged period of time. I mediated daily but my practice would change quite often. I got a lot out of my 10 day silent vipassana retreat, for example, but was unable to keep the practice up at home for more than a few weeks.
The truth is that I often felt like I had to do something extreme such as stay in an ashram, attend an all night 12 hour meditation or immerse myself in an isolation tank for an hour — to feel something truly powerful from the meditation. And other than feeling calmer and refreshed, I often struggled to go into a really deep state of meditation in London and often put it down to living in a big city. This is no longer true.
For me, Deborah’s meditation and sutra practice alongside her other exercises has been something else entirely. I’ve been shown a completely new side to meditation, that I might struggle to put into words. I really did and continue to connect deeply to my intuition and other states which I’ve previously been unable to access.

First experiences of Be a Modern Master
Prior to doing this course, I’d only ever used the mantra Aum before and if I’m totally honest, thought that mantras seemed a bit gimmicky and you could just repeat any word over and over and get the same experience. I no longer believe this to be true at all!
I am a mantra convert and highly recommend mantra meditation now for a daily practice, or to at least to try it out if you’ve struggled with other meditations. Repeating this mantra daily very quickly took me to whole new level. Even in the first five minutes of meditating I would find myself fully awake but somehow away in an entirely different state that I can’t logically explain but it felt amazing.
Within just a few weeks of this course, I had such a mind blowing insightful meditation experience — where I felt a huge rush of energy travelling upwards, and I could see what must have been my third eye or Ajna chakra. The meditation then unfolded giving me insights for my life and making me feel like I had somehow unlocked something in my brain. Since then — although not every day — I’m able to go back to this place, ask insightful questions about my life, get answers and direction, or just thoroughly enjoy and look forward to my meditations.
For me this is huge! One of the reasons meditation is a passion of mine is because in 2010 I had a life changing experience through a heart based meditation class in Tasmania. However, I never managed to be able to get back there or find a daily practice that suited me enough to want to stick with it. I’ve even written articles on my site saying how I approach meditation like it’s a pic ‘n’ mix, and feel it a very natural process to try out lots of different techniques.
While I will always be fascinated to try new spiritual practices, I have finally found my daily practice and will be continuing to use the sutras, exercises, and mantra Deborah gave us, which I now believe is really sacred and something I have a lot of respect for. It’s a lot more than just a word.

My morning routine
As part of my daily routine, I now do Deborah’s meditation and sutra practice alongside the Wim Hof Method and my yoga and find that all three of these things go perfectly together, so don’t worry if you have other practices too. This course, will work alongside what you do if you feel you don’t want to give something up.
I’ve written a lot already and I’ve focused mainly on the mantra meditation which you’re asked to do twice a day for 20 minutes, but it’s also OK if you can only manage the morning one. Another element is the sutras, which Deborah describes as being “mystical phrases from the ancient Vedas that shake up your energy field and connect you deeply to source”.
I feel incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to learn these 20 sutras. They’re ancient and often you have to study for years to be given access to all 20.
Constructive criticism
This then naturally leads me to constructive criticism. At the start of this course I got really excited and mentioned briefly to a good friend who is also a meditation practitioner, that I was doing Deborah’s course. I didn’t go into any huge amounts of detail, but my friend did express concern that I might be learning too much too quickly.
This after all took Deborah decades. The course is everything she learnt in India over a lifetime of her dedication to this practice, and she’s compiled it into this six week course which is available for anyone to try. The techniques on this course aren’t even readily available in books or through a Google search!
What’s the problem with this? Perhaps there’s a reason many people get introduced to the sutras very slowly. I don’t have the answer as I only started this course in December, but I certainly respect all opinions.
I ended up contacting Deborah directly after chatting with my friend and she was kind enough to get straight back to me and thanked me for reaching out. She advised me to listen to my gut, which she explained was the most important indicator during spiritual development. Deborah also mentioned that if I felt like I needed longer to absorb the teachings, I could take an extra week or two for each section of sutra delivery.
I’m so glad I did get in touch as this put my mind at rest. I received the course as a gift from Mindvalley and it would have been a real shame for me not to have experienced these teachings. My gut felt lucky and excited to be doing the course, but I also wanted to be respectful too.
I will also add that although this course is advertised as a six week course, I don’t believe it’s something you just do for six weeks to get everything you possibly can from it and then stop — although you will certainly accelerate your spiritual growth pretty fast in this time and get a lot out of it. For me it feels like I’ve been given a lifelong practice and it would feel very strange to just give up my mantra now and move onto a new one, but this is just my opinion.
Finding your purpose
If there’s one main focus of this course, I believe it’s about finding your inner calling, purpose or connecting with something so much greater within you to help guide you. My work on the outside can sometimes appear a bit scattered and all over the place — I love to write, I teach yoga, I also make yoga and spiritually inspired art prints on Etsy, and I can’t stop learning. During this course I kept being guided towards things that got me to really think carefully about my ‘why’, and essentially discover what my purpose truly is.
When I teach yoga, for example, I teach people mainly one to one, in couples and small groups and what I’m really passionate about is providing space for people to go inside and be where they are in this moment without trying to forcibly change anything.
I believe in the beauty of opposites and how when two opposites are paired something magical happens. I believe that there’s a whole other universe inside us and I feel committed to really exploring it as best as I can, and these practices help us discover who we truly are, without adding anything extra. Other than you and a place to sit where you won’t be disturbed, there’s nothing else you need for this course and I love that.
I still feel like the gifts are unravelling for me, and I’m excited to continue with Deborah’s practices and see what happens next.
‘Clearing your space’ exercise from Be a Modern Master
While I can’t share the mantra or sutras with you, when I first started this course I was living in a different house with my boyfriend and a few other people. My boyfriend and I have since moved into our own beautiful calming apartment still in London and just a short walk from the river.
Something I’ve often really struggled with in the past is absorbing the emotions of others, especially in a shared house. My previous home was really lovely too. However, when you are sensitive and you live or work with other people, I think it becomes quite hard sometimes to not absorb the emotions and thoughts of others. Thankfully this is no longer a big problem, but if you do often find yourself absorbing the emotions and thoughts of others, or you’re an empath, you might find this exercise useful.
One of the first exercises Deborah introduced us to was a ‘Clearing your space exercise’, which I found so helpful and wish I’d been introduced to it earlier. It’s such a small part of the course, but can feel really powerful if you are feeling weighed down or your environment feels ‘off’. I’ll try my best to describe it correctly.
When I moved I did this in my new house too along with burning white sage, and everyone always comments on how good the energy feels when they walk in.
You first close your eyes and start to visualise a white sheet as big as the space you’re in (although sometimes when I did it, I made my sheet much bigger!). You then start to raise the sheet off the floor, visualising, breathing and feeling it in your mind’s eye. See and experience it rising up and going right through your whole body.
Deborah goes onto describe how “You’re using your intentionality to raise all of the dark energy that’s in your space and even within yourself”. You then continue to raise the sheet higher, experiencing it floating up through you and above you to the ceiling of the space you’re in, then the roof and up into the sky. Afterwards, you and your space should hopefully feel lighter and brighter.
You might also like to try another guided meditation by Deborah King here. It’s a bit different from the meditations on the course, but like a lot of the exercises on the course, you’re connected pretty powerfully with your intuition which is a really beautiful and powerful thing.
Spring 2022 update
I usually switch meditation techniques, but several years on, Deborah’s mantra meditation is still my main meditation alongside the Wim Hof power breath and my yoga practice. It might not be for as long as it used to be as I have a one year old, but this is a beautiful meditation technique and a truly special course.
Final thoughts
Thank you to Deborah King for creating this course and being extremely generous and dedicated to sharing your life’s work. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity and grow tremendously in such a short space of time. My intuition feels heightened, I feel clearer and more focused with what I’m doing in life and excited. Let the adventure continue.
Remember that you are more powerful than you can imagine — and that the totality of your being extends far beyond the limits of your physical body. We are all of us on a journey of discovery, healing and growth… guiding us to become the confident, beautiful and whole beings we are truly meant to be. – Deborah King
