Teaching Private Yoga Sessions: A Q&A With Shayna Hiller

Whilst creating my online course The Art and Business of Teaching yoga One-to-One, I thought it was important to reach out to other private yoga teachers around the world. And so in this post, you can hear from world renowned yoga and meditation teacher and health coach Shayna Hiller

How did you start teaching yoga privately one to one?

One of my students from class approached me and inquired if I taught privately, and it grew through word of mouth in the beginning.

Where did you find most of your private yoga clients?

Word of mouth, website contact form & Yelp.

Do you have any tips for yoga teachers who would like to teach more private yoga clients but don’t know where to start?

Make sure people clearly KNOW you teach private yoga. Tell people. List it in your bio on your website and in your social media profiles. Write a list of people who you think would benefit from taking private yoga with you. Teach private yoga for free in the beginning in exchange for feedback and testimonials to use on your website and promotional material. Put yourself out there on social media, even if you are shy.

What would you say the main difference is between teaching group classes and private sessions?

Private sessions are completely different than group sessions in that they are way more intimate. People are paying for your energy, guidance and one-on-one level of service. In a group class you can usually get away with teaching a general sequence with certain modifications, yet a private class demands an extra level of presence and ability to adapt the practice to suit your clients’ specific needs.

Another big difference is that yoga teachers will earn more money teaching privates than in person, and it is a great way to build your yoga business outside of relying on studios.

What is the best way to get started with teaching online private yoga sessions?

Same answer as the answer I gave for tips. Plus, I recommend any yoga teacher who wants to teach private yoga online check out the Teach Yoga Online Mini-Course or Private Yoga Teaching Blueprint
